Behind the Drill: A Close-Up Look at Routesetting

Behind the Drill: A Close-Up Look at Routesetting

Woman Up 2026 clinics will take place across multiple Touchstone gyms in California. By expanding beyond a single location, we can reach more of our community and create greater access and opportunities to participate. Interested in what’s being offered? Check out the clinics here.

Registration opens on July 1st at noon; mark your calendars!

Instructor: Maggie Gierard (she/her)

Bio: Long before she knew what a crimp was, Maggie achieved the dream of so many little girls by becoming a real ballerina. After becoming disillusioned with the world of professional ballet, she pretended to be a normal person for a few years before wandering into a climbing gym and becoming completely obsessed with yet another ridiculous physical activity. Fast forward a few years, and her curiosity was piqued when she saw a bunch of misfits throwing plastic holds around and creating the climbs she so enjoyed. Intrigued by the similarities between routesetting and choreography, and never wanting to work in an office ever again, she decided to try this setting thing. She doesn’t regret her decision. When not climbing, Maggie loves going on scenic hikes with her husband, and drinking tea while reading and lounging on the couch with her two cats, Circus Peanut and Twix.

Clinic Description: Are you curious about what it’s really like to be a routesetter? What goes on on the other side of the barriers when they’re creating new climbs? Touchstone Routesetter and Bolt and Revolt Ambassador Maggie will be talking about her journey in setting, giving a peek behind the curtain of how setting works, and doing an interactive setting demo! You'll also have an opportunity to ask all your questions about how those colorful holds get on the walls in so many creative ways.

This is NOT a routesetting clinic--participants will not learn how to set. This is meant to be an opportunity to learn more about the process and experience of routesetting.

Prerequisites: All are welcome. This clinic is perfect for those who are curious about routesetting.

Participants: 20 maximum

When: 2:00pm - 4:00pm on July 12th at Hyperion Climbing in Redwood City
